Ronda Rousey's Accomplishments Are Overshadowed By Her Reproductive Capabilities

It was recently announced that Ronda Rousey will be the next challenger for WWE champion Nia Jax at the Money in the Bank card for the promotion. Upon this news, Rousey was questioned by TMZ Sports about when she would like to conceive her first child.

This kind of questioning seems to be something that women can’t escape from- no matter how successful, independant, or strong you are, your professional success will never outshine your reproductive capabilities, or responsibilities, as some see them. What man in this position, especially a man in a professional sport, would be asked a question about this, especially on the tips of such a huge announcement related to their career? Why does a woman’s worth always come back to her role as a wife and mother?

Now, don’t get me wrong, this was a very minute question that isn’t that big of a deal on its own. But it plays into a large issue that women in sports, and women in general face. It seems that women’s relational roles trump everything they have to offer our world, their talents, gifts, and accomplishments.

It also raises the questions of how valued women are without these status symbols- if Rousey wasn’t married, would she be poked and prodded for being single, or seen as a strong independent woman? Would people respect her choice to be completely career focused, or would she face constant pressure to partner up? I think we all know the answer to this speculation.

The question becomes, if someone as intelligent, courageous, groundbreaking, talented, and hard-working as Ronda Rousey can’t get passed questions of marriage, sex, and motherhood, who can?
